ちょうし【調子】

①［具合］

〔状態， コンディション， 体調， かげん〕

*condition

〖U〗状態， 調子

The player ［The car］ is in ［out of］ condition. その選手［その車］は調子がよい［悪い］《◆(1) 「調子がよい」は in good condition， 「調子が悪い」は in bad ［poor］ conditionともいう. (2) 単に体の調子がよいことをいう場合は， He is in good shape. のようにいう》.

**order

〖U〗正常な状態， 順調(⇔disorder)；(一般に)状態， 調子

in good ［bad］ running order 調子よく働いて［働かないで］.

*shape

〖U〗《略式》［通例形容詞を伴って］ 状態.

**form

〖U〗［通例 in ～］ 健康状態， 体調， コンディション；元気；(演奏・演技などの)調子

be in bad form ＝be off ［out of］ form 調子が悪い

be in good form ＝be in ［《主に英》on］ form 調子がよい.

ちょうし【調子】

1 〔音調〕 a tune; a tone; a key; a note; (高低の) a pitch; 〔拍子〕 time; rhythm.

●調子が合っている[いない] be in [out of] tune 《with…》

・調子が合う[外れる] get in [out of] tune

・彼女の声は調子が高い. Her voice is in a high key.

・このピアノは調子が狂っている. This piano is out of tune.

●高い調子で at a high pitch

・低い調子で in an undertone; in a low [subdued] tone.

●調子の高い[低い] high-[low-]pitched

・調子の高い声 a shrill note; a high-pitched voice

・調子の合わない dissonant; discordant; off(-key); out of tune [⇒ちょうしはずれ]

・調子のよい harmonious; melodious; rhythmical; musical 《voice》.

●調子を取る 〔指などで〕 beat time; 〔足踏みして〕 mark time; 〔ステップで〕 walk to a beat

・調子を外す strike a false note; sing out of tune

2 〔語調〕 a tone; a strain; a note; (抑揚) an accent; values; 〔言葉の言い回し〕 a vein; a tone; 〔様子〕 a vein; a mood.

●高い調子で話す speak in a high-pitched voice; 〔格調高く〕 speak in a lofty strain

・強い[きつい]調子で言う say in a peremptory tone

・激しい調子で反対意見を述べる voice one's opposition most vehemently [forcefully]

・ふざけた調子で話しかける speak to sb in a jocular tone

・自分に言い聞かせるような調子で言う speak as if to oneself

・新聞は皆大体同じ調子で論じている. All the papers speak more or less in the same strain.

●調子を下げる lower the pitch [tone]; 〔新聞などが〕 lower the tone; play down 《to the public》

・大衆向きに調子を下げて[落として]書く write down to the public

3 〔やり方〕 a way; a manner; a style; 〔こつ〕 a knack; a hang.

●こういう調子で in this way [manner]

・こういう調子でやってください. Please do it this way.

・彼はだれに対しても同じような調子で接する. He acts the same way toward everyone.

●調子を飲み込む get the hang 《of…》; get [acquire] the knack 《of…》.

●その調子, その調子! That's it. | That's the way. | Keep it up. | That's more like it.

・田舎では万事がこの調子だ. This is the way things go in the country.

・この人, いつもこんな調子なんですよ. This is the way he always is.

4 〔具合･状態〕 a condition; a state (of health); order.

●調子は上々である 〔体の〕 be in the best of health; be in excellent [perfect] health; 《口》 be in the pink.

●体の調子がいい be [feel] well; be in good condition; 〔運動選手などが〕 be in fine shape; be in training [form, trim]

・調子が悪い 〔体の〕 be [feel] unwell; be out of condition [sorts, form]; be in bad shape; 〔機械などの〕 be out of order [trim, gear]; something is wrong 《with…》; be out of kilter [whack]

・今日は体の調子がよくない. I am not up to the mark [snuff] today.

・今日は一日エンジンの調子がよかった. The engine ran great all day today.

・プリンターの調子が悪い. The printer is out of whack. | Something is wrong with the printer.

・機械の調子がおかしい. The machine is not working properly.

・あれからすべての調子が狂い始めた. From that point on, everything began to go out of kilter.

・そんなこと言われると調子狂っちゃうなあ. Being told something like that messes things up for me.

・突然の笑い声に(演説の)調子が狂ってしまった. The speaker was thrown off stride by the sudden laughter.

・彼は少し調子が変だよ. Something is a bit wrong with him. | He's not his usual self.

・この運動をするとお腹の調子がよくなります. This exercise will tone up your stomach.

●この調子では at this rate; if things go (on) like this

・そんな調子でやっていてはだめだ. It won't work if you do it like that.

・この調子では今月中にはできあがるまい. At this rate it will not be finished this month.

・あんな調子では大したものにはなれないだろう. If he keeps on like that, he will never amount to much.

・こんな調子で 1 年が過ぎていった. Things went on like this as a year passed.

●体の調子を整える tone up one's body; get in good [proper] trim [shape]

・調子を取り戻す 〔選手が〕 regain one's form

・調子を落とす[崩す] 〔選手が〕 fall out of shape; lose one's form

・調子を崩さないようにする 〔選手が〕 keep in training [form, trim]

・調子を取り戻させる 〔選手の〕 get sb back into shape.

●調子はいかがですか. 〔物事などの〕 How are things (going)?

・万事調子よく行った. Everything went all right [well].

5 〔勢い〕 strain; 〔はずみ〕 impetus; spur 《of the moment》.

●調子が出る warm up 《to one's work》; get into the swing of 《one's work》; hit [get into] one's stride

・やっと調子が出てきた. 〔運動選手などが〕 I finally got into my rhythm.

・今日はいつもの調子が出なかった. 〔選手などが〕 He wasn't in the best of form [up to the mark] today.

・そのトーナメントでは日本選手はついに最後まで調子が出なかった. The Japanese players finally ended up playing poorly during the whole of that tournament.

6 【相場】 a tone; a trend.

●健全な[手堅い]調子を示す[保持する] 〔市場が〕 display [maintain] a healthy [steady] tone.

調子がいい glib; superficially fluent.

●調子がいいやつ a glib [thoughtless] person; a timeserver

・調子がいいことばかり言う say (only) what one thinks will please one's listener(s) [one's listener(s) want(s) to hear].

調子に乗る 〔得意になる･いい気になる〕 be [get] elated by [with]…; 〔はしゃぐ〕 get carried away.

●調子に乗ってしゃべる talk without reserve [restraint]

・つい調子に乗ってよけいなことまで言ってしまった. In the end, I got carried away and said too much.

調子を合わせる attune oneself 《to…》; make oneself agreeable to sb; play in sb's key; keep in tune 《with…》; chime in with others; 《口》 keep in with sb; 〔楽器の〕 tune 《a piano》; put 《a piano》 in tune; 〔演芸などで相手に〕 play up to sb.

●彼はだれとでもうまく調子を合わせていく. He gets on well [nicely] with others.

・オーケストラは調子を合わせているところだった. The orchestra was tuning up.
